Summary

On the evening of June 5, 1962, residents of Dayton and Kettering, Ohio, reported seeing a white-yellowish light moving back and forth across the sky for about twenty minutes. The object appeared brighter than a star and considerably larger. As it reached the limits of its path, it seemed to fade and then disappear just before reversing direction.

The Air Force investigated the sighting by collecting witness statements through detailed questionnaires. Multiple observers reported watching the light perform its strange movements over roughly the same time period between 10:32 p.m. and shortly after midnight (2232-0055 local time). Witnesses described the object as having fuzzy edges and noted that it did not exhibit the dramatic maneuvers or unusual behaviors typically associated with more exotic sightings. The observation took place during clear night conditions, and witnesses indicated they could see stars in the sky.

During its investigation, the Air Force determined that an advertising campaign was underway in Dayton at the time of the sightings. A searchlight had been deployed to attract public attention. The Air Force concluded that the light reported by the witnesses was most likely produced by this searchlight reflecting off the sky and clouds, which would explain the object's back-and-forth motion, its fading appearance as it reached the edges of its trajectory, and its behavior of disappearing and reappearing.

The case file documents were classified under Project Blue Book, the Air Force's official UFO investigation program. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 35 pages.
