Project Blue Book Case File
Salisbury, MarylandAugust 1952
Summary
On August 23, 1952, a lawyer driving south on U.S. Highway 13 near Salisbury, Maryland, saw an unusual light in the sky. He described it as a bright bluish-green glow traveling at high speed from north to south. The object had fuzzy edges and appeared to glow like the face of a radium watch dial. He watched it for between one and three seconds before it passed from view below an overcast sky.
The observer reported his sighting to the Baltimore Ground Observer Corps Filter Center, which forwarded the report to the U.S. Air Force. At the time of the sighting, the sky was overcast with cloud bases around 23,000 feet and tops near 29,000 feet. Visibility was poor, ranging from two to seven miles, with fog and haze present. Wind data was collected at various altitudes to help analyze the observation.
The Air Force investigated the sighting as part of Project Blue Book. The observer was identified as a 43-year-old attorney from Forest Hills, New York, though the investigation noted that his reliability and experience with aerial phenomena were unknown. The report was not received at the Air Force's analysis station until August 28, 1952, five days after the actual sighting.
The Air Force concluded that the sighting was unidentified. The file contains 20 pages of declassified records as held by the National Archives.
