Summary

On August 1, 1955, near 8:27 p.m. local time, a ground observer at a post in Danville, California reported one bulbous object. The Air Force recorded the report under Project 10073, its official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The object was ruby red, redder around the edge and red-orange in the center. It was seen through 7 by 50 binoculars at dusk. It passed through about a 40 degree arc and faded from view in less than one minute. Weather was clear with unlimited visibility.

The Air Force noted the report was vague. Officials listed it as a possible meteor or possible aircraft and concluded there was not enough data for a firm evaluation. A 1958 letter shows the witness wrote in years later, and the sighting was added to the files.
