Summary

On August 18, 1962, two men standing near a 150-foot radio tower under construction at the west end of Bermuda saw a bright white object in the sky. The men, a radio station owner and a radio announcer, were about 82 feet from the base of the tower when they spotted the object. It appeared roughly egg-shaped and looked about the size of an aspirin tablet when held at arm's length. The object hung almost straight overhead, at roughly 70 degrees above the horizon.

For 10 to 15 minutes, the object remained perfectly still in the same spot relative to the radio tower. Its outline was sharp while it hung stationary but very bright white. Then, without warning, it began to move directly east. Once it started moving, it disappeared from sight in just 15 to 20 seconds, traveling at what witnesses described as tremendous speed.

While one of the observers was looking away, the other man saw a separate event. When told that the first object was moving, he looked back and saw three egg-shaped objects much farther away, heading west. These three objects appeared dull white, not brilliant. They lacked sharp outlines and seemed to waver as they moved, though they held a westerly course until vanishing over the horizon in 12 to 15 seconds. Their movement seemed unsteady and did not look like birds in flight.

The sighting occurred in clear daylight with excellent visibility. Weather conditions at the time were mild, with temperatures near 83 degrees Fahrenheit. An Air Force investigator from Kindley Air Force Base in Bermuda looked into the case and found that no balloons or other known objects in the area could explain what the witnesses saw. The file does not state a final conclusion about what the objects were. This case file, consisting of 7 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
