B-17 a/c over Southern Calif., July 1955July 1955

Insufficient Data

Summary

On July 12, 1955, over Southern California, military and civilian witnesses reported one object for about seven minutes. The sighting was seen from the ground, including from an aircraft.

The object was a single bright red ball of fire with a luminous trail. It looked about the size of a nickel held at arm's length. The object exploded in a cloud of smoke.

The Air Force comments say this sighting and a related report appear to be the same event, seen by two parties some distance apart. Because of that distance, the card concludes the object was probably astronomical.
