Project Blue Book Case File
Argentina, June 1962June 1962
Summary
In May and June 1962, Argentina experienced a wave of reported unidentified flying object sightings that captured widespread public attention. The American Embassy in Buenos Aires forwarded accounts of various objects or fragments that appeared in Argentine newspapers and seemed to fall from the sky during this period. The sightings included reports of lights in the night sky, unusual aircraft-like objects moving at high speeds, and a few claims of landings or close encounters. The Air Force's preliminary record card listed the conclusion as "probably balloon," though the case file notes that insufficient data was available for a thorough analysis.
When the Air Force requested photo analysis of one image forwarded through the Secretary of the Air Force, analysts found serious limitations. The photograph showed a circular, disc-shaped object with a serrated outer edge, but the image came from a very heavily damaged negative. The original negative was unavailable. No details about the time, place, or circumstances of the observation were provided. From a technical perspective, the poor quality of the print and lack of supporting information made it impossible to draw any concrete conclusions about what the object might have been.
The investigative file runs 29 pages and includes newspaper clippings, magazine excerpts, and analysis reports. Much of the material consists of secondhand accounts drawn from Argentine press reports rather than direct interviews with witnesses. A technical analysis by a photographer at the National Observatory of Córdoba cast doubt on at least one series of photographs, citing suspicious angles and contradictory shadows, though other professional photographers examined the same pictures and concluded they were not fakes. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, containing 29 scanned pages.
