Summary

On July 1, 1961, seven miles southwest of Manchester, Tennessee, a UFO was sighted. The object first appeared as a line similar to an aircraft condensation trail but faded quickly and then became intense until head-end glowed white to the size of a pencil diameter before burning out. Only one gas sighted. The trail length appeared to be approximately ten times the diameter of the final white spot and followed a parabolic trajectory. No sound was heard. An observer at 35 degrees elevation described a falling track to abducting degrees elevation before disappearing. The sighting occurred on July 6, 1961, during daylight. The observer was 35 statute miles north and 360 seconds, or 2 minutes north or 7 nautical miles on 152 degree heading from Manchester, Tennessee. The observer was an experienced USAF jet fighter pilot. At time of sighting weather was clear skies in area of sighting. The Air Force evaluation was unknown.

10. BRIEF SUMMARY OF SIGHTING: Initial sighting was of a line similar to an aircraft condensation trail which faded for a fraction of a second and intensified until head-end glowed white to the size of a pencil diameter before burning out. Trail length appeared to be approx ten times diameter of final white spot and allowed a parabolic trajectory. Trail first 90 degrees. Initial sighting was at approx 35 degrees elev and described a falling track to about 20 degrees before disappearing.

11. COMMENTS: [illegible] Reportedly in characteristic of a meteor or a large fragment thereof. Of a meteor one ordinates called a bright passage.
