Summary

On June 1, 1961, near Ocean Station Victor at coordinates 34-02N 164-17E, military personnel observed a star-like object brighter than a star. The object was sighted by Dushe, Alioth, and Alkaid bearing 340 degrees at altitude 70 degrees. It was tracked across the sky and last observed at bearing 113 degrees and altitude 19 degrees. The object appeared to be at 120 degrees true altitude and was moving at high speed with a south wind of 13 knots. No duration or speed of the object was given. The Air Force concluded the sighting involved a satellite with the case marked as ECHO I.

10. BRIEF SUMMARY OF SIGHTING: Star-like object except brighter on course of 120 dog true observed at high altitude. Appeared to be satellite.

11. COMMENTS: The object of this sighting has the characteristic of a satellite and ECHO I was in position to be observed. No duration or speed of the object was given, however all indications are that the object was a satellite and the case is carried as ECHO I.
