Project Blue Book Case File
34.00N 163.50E, July 1962July 1962
Summary
In late July 1962, the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book received a report of a bright white object sighted at coordinates 34.00 North, 163.50 East (in the Pacific Ocean region). According to the initial report, the object was brighter than a first-magnitude star, was observed at medium altitude at an elevation angle of about 50 degrees, and remained visible for about seven minutes. The sky was partly cloudy with visibility of about 15 miles.
The report was filed on July 31, 1962, but the actual sighting had occurred three days earlier on July 28 at 3:09:10 Zulu time (a military timekeeping standard). The object's speed was reported as visible to the naked eye. The transmission of this sighting report was distributed to multiple commands and agencies, including the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Beyond the basic sighting parameters recorded on the form, the case file as preserved does not appear to contain detailed investigative follow-up, additional witness statements, or technical analysis specific to this Pacific Ocean sighting. The file does contain numerous unrelated reports from July 1962 filed under "No Case (Information Only)" status, covering sightings across North America and abroad, but these are separate incidents.
The Air Force's evaluation of this sighting is marked as "unknown." The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 16 pages of scanned microfilm.
