Summary

On February 20, 1961, the crew of the ship SS Erihio reported a bright object over the Atlantic Ocean, about 150 nautical miles east of Cape Canaveral, near 28 degrees 15 minutes north, 77 degrees 41 minutes west. The object was seen by five crew members and the ship's master. It was visible for about 90 seconds and moved from southwest to northeast.

The witnesses described an amber colored object about one foot in diameter. It rose into the sky very rapidly on a bearing of 250 degrees true and set toward 070 degrees true. No sound was heard. The object was bright and circular and was followed by two wings that formed a parabola, with the main body in the center.

The Air Force card notes the flight path is characteristic of a missile taking off. A check showed that a Titan missile was launched at 0100Z on the day of the sighting, and the path of the missile matched the path reported for the object.
