28.34N 163.42W (PACIFIC), November 1961November 1961
Summary
On November 11 or 12, 1961, a military observer aboard a ship in the Pacific reported an object at about 4:31 (0431 Zulu). The position was near 23 degrees north, 163 degrees west. The object was round and white, heading northeast. One object was seen. It traveled on a straight track and was lost in haze on the horizon after about 9 minutes. The observers used a sextant and binoculars while getting a navigation fix. The Air Force compared the path and timing to the Echo satellite, which would have crossed the equator heading northeast and been visible at that time and place. It listed the case as Echo I.
