Summary

On May 6, 1963 (about dusk by Greenwich time of May 7), Air Force tower operators at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, reported a circular white or light orange light. It was first seen at about 15 degrees above the horizon and was watched through 7 by 50 binoculars. The sighting lasted about 6 minutes.

The light climbed toward the south, rising to about 60 degrees above the horizon. A T-33 aircraft in the area was notified, and its pilot and passenger observed the same object. Their description matched the tower operators' account. There was a temperature inversion at about 5,000 feet.

The pilot and passenger believed the object was either a cloud or a balloon. The Air Force, in its Project 10073 record, said the object had all the characteristics of a balloon sighting and evaluated the case as a balloon.
