Summary

On September 9, 1960, a military pilot in a T-33 jet flying about 60 to 111 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri, reported a bright sighting at 2121 (9:21 p.m.) at 35,000 feet. The pilot saw a brilliant shooting star type flash. The burn trace started about 30 degrees above the horizon at eye level and grew brighter to a final burn-out near eye level. The path looked nearly vertical and was directly over the nose of the aircraft. The final burn-out was very white, like a magnesium flare. The Air Force record card listed the case as a meteor. The card noted the description is characteristic of a meteor. (Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.)
