Summary

On February 22, 1961, around 5:00 p.m. local time, two military observers at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, reported a bright burning object. The observers were a missile officer and a weather forecaster. The sighting was made in daylight, since the sun was still well above the horizon.

The object was brightly burning, with a greenish yellow flame that flashed on and off. It appeared 15 to 20 degrees above the southern horizon and traveled from east to west.

The Air Force card notes the observers should have been familiar with most common objects. However, it states the duration of the sighting and the flight details, including speed, were left out of the report. Because of the missing information, the report was placed in the insufficient data category.
