Summary

On the evening of March 24, 1959, a resident of Vandalia, Ohio reported seeing a red and blue-green object in the night sky at 10 p.m. The witness was driving at about 20 miles per hour when they spotted the object. The object appeared to fall straight down in a way typical of a meteor.

The Air Force's summary of the case noted that the description, flight path, and duration of the sighting were all consistent with meteor activity. The investigating officers marked the case as either a balloon or possibly a balloon, though the evidence pointed more clearly toward a meteor.
