Summary

On the evening of November 17, 1962, a married couple sitting on the front porch of their home near Dade City, Florida, witnessed an unusual sight in the sky. They first saw what they thought was an airplane approaching from the northeast, with two bright lights on its wings and one in the center. Within minutes, the three lights came to a complete stop directly above them.

The witnesses watched the lights hover in place for three to five minutes, using a post on their porch as a reference point to confirm they were stationary. After this pause, the lights suddenly accelerated toward the southeast at high speed. As they departed, the three objects moved in an irregular, bouncing formation, with their relative positions shifting in distance from one another. The entire event lasted between eleven and fifteen minutes before the lights faded into the background of the night sky.

The Air Force investigation that followed found the witness to be highly credible. He was a college-educated businessman, a former Marine Corps officer, and described as mature, stable, and of sound judgment. His wife corroborated every detail of his account. MacDill Air Force Base conducted the preliminary analysis, consulting with local Federal Aviation Administration officials, radar operators, weather services, and navigational agencies. The night was unusually clear with excellent visibility and no clouds or interference. Despite these thorough inquiries, no conventional explanation emerged. The Air Force noted that the objects appeared to be under intelligent control throughout the sighting, based on their deliberate movements and changes in direction.

On the form filed with the Air Force, the case was marked as unidentified, with a note that there was no indication the objects posed a threat to U.S. security.
