Summary

A 13-year-old student in Springfield, Ohio reported seeing an unusual object in a school yard during daylight hours in April or May 1962. The boy said he watched a bunch of small dark specks come together in the sky to form what looked like a solid circle. The object was light brown in color and held that shape for a few minutes before fading away. Other schoolmates nearby saw it too but paid little attention.

The witness did not report what he had seen until more than a year later, in July 1963, when he mailed in a detailed letter and filled-out questionnaire to the Air Force. In his letter, he described how the object appeared to materialize and disappear suddenly, and how only clear blue sky remained after it vanished.

The Air Force evaluated the report but noted that the long delay in reporting the sighting, combined with the lack of a specific date and no detailed information from the other witnesses, made accurate analysis impossible. In a reply dated July 29, 1963, the Air Force offered to re-examine the case if new evidence came forward. The case file is marked as containing insufficient data for evaluation. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 13 scanned pages.
