Summary

On the evening of June 4, 1960, a resident of Springfield, Ohio, reported seeing a silvery object high in the sky. The witness spotted the object at 2003 (8:03 p.m.) local time. It appeared at zenith, meaning directly overhead, and shone brighter than a star. The object seemed to hold steady in place but gradually faded from view over the course of roughly eight to nine minutes.

The Air Force's investigation concluded that the object was probably a weather balloon reflecting sunlight at a high altitude. Investigators noted that the fading effect would be consistent with the setting of the sun at the height where a balloon would be located. The witness's report was logged as "unknown" in the initial evaluation but later resolved to "probably balloon" status.

The case file contains the witness's completed questionnaire and analysis sheets, though the OCR quality on some pages is poor. The full case file, comprising 12 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
