Summary

On August 4, 1956, military observers at a Coast Guard station near South Portland, Maine, reported a single object. The sighting was recorded at 0722Z (night). It was still in sight when the report was made.

The witnesses described one round, large, white light. The object moved to the northeast, then turned south and moved slowly. It was watched both with the naked eye and through binoculars. The light was first seen between about 30 and 45 degrees azimuth.

The report noted that two similar sightings had been reported in the same area in the past 36 hours, one reporting nine objects and one reporting six. An intercept attempted on an earlier report 18 hours before had negative results.

Although the wind direction did not match the object's movement exactly, the Air Force evaluated the sighting as a balloon.
