Project Blue Book Case File
Santa Ana, CaliforniaJanuary 1953
Summary
Two experienced Air Force pilots flying a KC-97 tanker aircraft over Santa Ana, California, on the evening of January 9, 1953, observed a formation of blue lights approaching them at high speed. The pilots were at an altitude of 15,500 feet on a heading of 330 degrees. The lights moved toward their aircraft so rapidly that the aircraft commander executed an immediate left turn to avoid a collision. Almost as suddenly as they appeared, the lights slowed, held position for a moment, and then banked away upward and vanished. The entire sighting lasted approximately five seconds. The pilots heard no sound from the objects and noted that the lights appeared in a slightly bent V formation during the encounter. They confirmed that the formation changed from a banked to a level position before breaking away.
The two pilots were the only crew members who witnessed the event. They immediately checked to rule out reflections within their own aircraft cockpit, confirming they were familiar with the B-29 reflection characteristics. Clear skies and good visibility prevailed at the time. The pilots called Los Angeles radio traffic control and military flight service to report the sighting, but neither facility reported any other aircraft in the immediate area.
The investigation quickly identified a likely explanation. Another pilot flying in the region at the time of the sighting reported that two KC-97 tanker aircraft were in the vicinity of Santa Ana. One of those KC-97 aircraft was equipped with a considerable number of blue formation lights. The Air Force concluded that the observed lights were from another KC-97 equipped with this type of lighting system.
