Summary

In September 1961, near San Diego, California, pilots reported a bright light and what looked like an explosion. The bright light was in view for about 2 to 3 seconds, and the apparent explosion lasted about half a second. It was first seen as a ball of light with a very short tail and looked like a ball of fire. The pilots said the object had a short tail and very little motion. The Air Force noted the pilots saw what appeared to be an explosion lasting less than one second.
