Project Blue Book Case File
SAN ANTONIO TEX, October 1952October 1952
Summary
On the afternoon of October 19, 1952, a couple sitting on the porch of their home in San Antonio, Texas saw three round, metallic-looking objects flying in a V formation across the sky. The sighting began around 1:30 p.m. and lasted three to four minutes. One object flew noticeably lower and appeared more than twice the size of the other two. Compared to the size of objects held at arm's length, the lower object resembled a tennis ball while the upper two resembled half dollars.
The witness reported that the objects were flying straight and level, heading due south at an estimated speed of 250 miles per hour. The lower object appeared to flip slowly as it moved, alternating between showing an aluminum-like surface on one side and an olive drab (yellowish-brown) color on the other. The two upper objects appeared to be aluminum throughout and did not flip. The witness noted no visible means of propulsion, no sound, no exhaust, and no aerodynamic features on any of the objects. The lower object eventually hovered briefly, then shrank in size rapidly until it disappeared from view. The witness lost sight of the other two objects during this sequence and could not determine how they vanished.
The witness's wife also observed the objects and substantially confirmed her husband's account. The couple called neighbors to view the sighting, but they arrived too late to see anything. The observer was a former Air Force serviceman with six years of flight duty who was familiar with conventional aircraft. At the time of the sighting, he worked as a buyer for a lumber company in San Antonio. The Air Force's evaluation of the case was listed as "unknown," with "probably balloon" and "possibly balloon" also noted as potential explanations. The case file comprises 15 pages as held by the National Archives.
