Project Blue Book Case File
Rabat, French Morocco, September 1952September 1952
Summary
On the night of September 13-14, 1952, a disc-shaped object was spotted near Rabat, French Morocco. The witness, a civilian assigned to the Directorate of Intelligence at the 5th Air Division, observed the object between 2199 and 2243 hours (approximately 10 p.m. to 10:43 p.m.). The witness had experience working on naval aircraft for about three and a half years.
The object appeared as a formation of eight white lights evenly spaced apart. It looked like lights seen through fog, with no break in the formation during the sighting. The object was disc-shaped and made no sound. It moved in a northwesterly direction at first, then turned west and then southwest. The witness observed it for approximately five seconds. The estimated speed was about twice that of a T-33 jet aircraft, though the exact altitude remained unknown. No unusual activity was reported by French civil air authorities in the area.
Weather conditions at the time were partly cloudy with alto cumulus clouds at 9,000 feet. Surface winds were light, coming from the south-southeast at two to five knots. Visibility was very good, extending to about 20 kilometers (roughly 12 miles).
The Air Force investigation, based on the available file materials, concluded the object was "probably a balloon," though the OCR quality of later pages makes the complete reasoning difficult to extract fully. The case file, held by the National Archives, comprises 8 scanned pages.
