Project Blue Book Case File
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIAFebruary 1952
Summary
On February 11, 1952, between about 0300 and 0315 (3:00 to 3:15 a.m.) Eastern time, two Air Force officers flying a T-11 aircraft from Cleveland, Ohio, to Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, saw an unusual object near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A cold front had forced them to change plans and land at Greater Pittsburgh Airport.
The pilot reported a brilliant lighted object high to the right, flying the opposite direction to theirs. At first they thought an aircraft was on fire because of its brightness and comet like look, with yellow to orange flame color. As it passed, they saw the flame pulse about once or twice a second. They thought it might be a jet because of its speed, but said they had never seen a pulsating flame from a jet at night. One compared it to buzz bombs he had seen in Belgium during the war, though much larger.
The object was judged to be more than 5 miles away and flew over a cloud buildup between 12,000 and 15,000 feet before vanishing. The sky was clear and moonlit. They watched it for about one minute. The file does not state a final conclusion.
