Unidentified

Summary

On the evening of August 7, 1962, a resident of Petersburg, Virginia reported seeing a bright object moving across the sky. The object appeared as a steady, unpulsating light with the brightness of the brightest star. It moved from the northwest toward the southeast, crossing about two-thirds of the visible sky. When directly overhead, the object seemed to waver slightly before continuing its path and eventually disappearing.

The Air Force received a letter from the witness asking about the sighting. Officials noted that while the object possessed general characteristics of an artificial satellite, the initial report lacked enough detail for a complete evaluation. A questionnaire was sent to the witness to gather more information about what he had observed and whether other witnesses were present.

The file includes a detailed analysis comparing the sighting to known satellites passing over Petersburg on the night in question. The Air Force noted that the Echo satellite was scheduled to pass over Virginia approximately 15 minutes after the reported sighting time, and a possible time error could place Echo in closer alignment with the observation. The file also lists predicted positions and times for Echo and other satellites over multiple U.S. cities during early August 1962.

On October 2, 1962, the Air Force formally concluded that the sighting remained unidentified. The case was closed without a definitive explanation, though the evidence pointed toward a satellite as the probable source.

The full case file, as preserved by the National Archives, comprises 15 scanned pages.
