Summary

On October 22, 1961, a military pilot at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, reported an object at about 6:01 p.m. local time (2303 Zulu). The witness was a pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours, rated excellent for reliability. The object was circular and bright red, fading to a white flash. One object was seen, with no sound heard. It was at about 40 to 45 degrees elevation, on a straight and level path from east to west. It disappeared as a white flash heading west. The sighting lasted about 10 to 12 seconds. Weather was excellent. The Air Force listed the case as a fireball type meteor.
