Patrick AFB, FloridaJune 1954
Summary
On June 15, 1954, an airman at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida reported seeing a bright, glowing object hanging in the sky near a local flying field. The object was roughly the size of the moon. It appeared nearly round and resembled an aircraft landing light. The airman watched as the glow shifted from bright white to red, then faded without moving from its original position. Moments later, a similar light appeared in the same spot, again turning red and then bright white before vanishing suddenly. The entire event lasted about five minutes. The witness noted that the moon was visible nearby and partially obscured by clouds at the time.
Over the next few days, Air Force investigators gathered reports of related sightings around central Florida. An operations specialist at Vero Beach reported seeing a light change colors from amber to bright white to green on the same date. In the town of Indialantic, a civilian reported witnessing an intense white beam of light flashing from a point about one hundred yards offshore. The beam rotated clockwise and eventually stopped responding when the witness shined a car spotlight in its direction. Local tides at that location measured approximately forty feet.
On June 17, a senior Air Force pilot and two airmen at Patrick AFB observed a bright, moving light in the pre-dawn hours. The object first appeared to the south-southwest at a low angle, then moved northward, eventually passing directly overhead at a steep angle. The light was blue-white and fluorescent in color, blinking regularly at consistent intervals. The object traveled faster than any known aircraft. It made sharp turns and climbed toward the northwest until clouds blocked the view. The witnesses heard no sound and saw no trail or exhaust. The light appeared several times brighter than the brightest visible star, and a full moon was visible in the sky at the same time.
The Air Force investigated the sightings using weather records, including data from weather balloons released in the area on both dates. A weather balloon had been sent aloft at 2200 hours (10 p.m.) on June 15, and another on June 18. The file notes that no aircraft were known to be operating in the area at the times of the sightings. Despite the investigation, the Air Force's official evaluation recorded on the case card labeled the June 17 sighting as a balloon. The complete case file, comprising 13 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
