Project Blue Book Case File
Parkland, MarylandAugust 1952
Summary
On August 28, 1952, at 4:45 p.m. local time, a member of the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. reported one round object over Parkland, Maryland. He was considered reliable, and three other members of his family also saw it. The object appeared to be metallic and about half the size of a fighter aircraft. It was at about 5,000 feet.
The object flew in a straight line parallel to the ground and seemed to revolve slightly. It glowed from reflected sunlight and did not appear to give off light or power of its own, but seemed to drift. There was no trail, exhaust, or sound, and it moved very slowly. It was watched for about 30 minutes and disappeared by moving slowly north out of sight at 5:15 p.m.
Weather was clear with no clouds. No other aircraft was noticed in the area. The Project 10073 worksheet, the Air Force's record for these reports, notes the source was an inexperienced observer and that the sighting was within 10 minutes of a balloon release. The record card lists the conclusion as probably balloon.
