Summary

On October 31, 1953, at about 7 p.m. near Annapolis, Maryland, five civilians reported a small round object. The object was extremely bright and shiny with a possible red cast. It held a still position high in the sky. Witnesses first looked up to watch a flight of four F-51 planes and then saw the object above them. One witness used small binoculars.

After about 15 minutes the object exploded in a burst of white smoke and broke into two halves. One half appeared to fall fast and faded from sight. The other half fell more slowly and also faded high in the air. The sky was clear and bright with no clouds.

The Air Force record lists the conclusion as a weather balloon. A weather balloon had been launched at 7 p.m. from Annapolis. The case was also marked as a possible weather balloon in the evaluation.
