Project Blue Book Case File
Pacific Coast, September 1961September 1961
Summary
On September 27, 1961, at about 1557Z (Greenwich time), a military radar operator aboard an AEW&C aircraft off the Pacific coast reported objects on radar. The report was filed on the Project 10073 record card, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The operator first saw five objects on the scope. Four were heading about 090 degrees magnetic and one was heading about 020 degrees. They moved at high speed and disappeared into sea clutter. Three minutes later two more objects appeared and moved across the scope. The speed of one was measured at about 1800 knots over 20 nautical miles. A single stationary object then appeared, stayed about two minutes, then moved at about 60 knots before being lost in sea clutter near 1610Z.
The weather was clear with no temperature inversion. The card notes a check of the identification equipment indicated that if the sighting was caused by interference, it must have come from an external source.
