Summary

On May 1, 1962, two navigators and a quartermaster aboard a vessel in the Pacific between California and Hawaii reported an object in the night sky. The sighting was at about 0420Z and lasted about 1 minute.

The object was white with a small white tail and made no noise. It impressed the observers as a falling star. It held a straight flight path at about 20 degrees elevation, bearing 018, before disappearing behind a cloud. Its brightness was like a first magnitude star. The sky was broken overcast.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the object was evaluated as a meteor, noting a small slow moving meteor would give this impression and that the duration may have been overestimated.
