Summary

On August 11, 1958, a civilian near Olean, New York, reported an unidentified flying object at 1945Z, during daytime. The witness described one round, silver object about the size of a normal plate. It made a loud roar. The object was first seen in the northwest and disappeared in the southeast at about 5,000 feet. The sighting lasted about 10 seconds.

Weather was clear with winds from the north and 10-mile visibility. Investigators noted the speed was in the range of a meteor unless the object was very low, and that a low aircraft should have been identified. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was insufficient data for analysis. The card also includes a separate letter about a related report from a son near Collinsville, Illinois, which the Air Force said suggested a bolide or fireball. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
