Project Blue Book Case File

Olean, New YorkAugust 1957

Unidentified

Summary

On August 23, 1957, in Olean, New York, a civilian civil defense director watched one round object for about 45 minutes. The object was smaller than a star and reddish in color. It looked like a moving bright light with an up-and-down motion. It moved to the north-northwest. The sky was clear. The Air Force record card for Project 10073, its official record for unidentified flying object reports, lists the conclusion as balloon. The card notes a balloon had been released just before the sighting and that the wind would have carried it toward the observer. The file also includes a news clipping about the northern lights seen across the country that night.
