Summary
On October 30, 1953, at about 0955 local time, a crew flying near Norton Air Force Base in California saw one object. The sighting came from a C-45 aircraft in flight. The crew watched the object for about seven minutes. It appeared directly below the plane, then passed into the plane's flight path. It climbed almost straight up until it was lost from sight. It stayed at the 12 o'clock position the whole time.
The object was bright red on its leading portion and bright white on its trailing portion. Its shape could not be made out through the glare. Witnesses said it looked about the size of a grapefruit held at arm's length. There was no exhaust, no trail, and no sound. No photos were taken and no radar tracked it. The pilot and crew were rated very reliable.
The Air Force record for this report, part of its Project 10073 files for unidentified flying object reports, lists the conclusion as insufficient data for evaluation. A promised follow-up report with full details was never received.
