Summary

On the nights of December 4 and 5, 1954, a woman in Northeast, Pennsylvania reported seeing a strange object hovering near Lake Erie. She described it as bright orange, shaped like a fish tug or disc, with what looked like portholes or windows along its sides. The object appeared to pulse with light and seemed to hover stationary over the water. During the eight or nine minutes she watched it on the first night, the craft moved swiftly east and west. On the second night, she saw it again around midnight and had time to fetch binoculars for a closer look. She estimated the object was no more than a mile away and said the light was so bright it made details hard to see.

The sighting received considerable local attention and was covered in regional newspapers. A priest and astronomer at nearby St. Mary's College in Northeast jokingly suggested the object might be a spacecraft observing his observatory, whose lighted dome resembled a rocket nose. He also noted that the reported windows on the craft might match the reflective qualities of his observatory dome under certain lighting conditions.

Air Force intelligence officers who analyzed the case concluded that the sighting was a probable reflection from a known object. They suggested the orange light and disc shape could have resulted from the reflection of a ship on Lake Erie or possibly the illuminated dome of the observatory, depending on its location relative to the witness's home. The officers noted that haze and mist over water were conditions known to cause reflection phenomena. The case file does not indicate whether investigators verified the exact location of the observatory or checked weather records in detail.

The Air Force marked this case as unidentified while noting the probable reflection explanation. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 20 scanned pages.
