Project Blue Book Case File
North Rome, PAOctober 1953
Summary
On October 3, 1953, between about 8:00 and 8:15 p.m. local time, a civilian saw an object near North Rome Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The information reached the Air Force through the FBI.
The witness saw the object from outside his home, about two miles away in a northwesterly direction and about 15 degrees above the horizon. It looked stationary at first, but when checked against a fixed object it moved slightly sideways and up and down in a small area. It hovered like a helicopter. It looked larger than a star and gave off an orange pulsating light. No sound was heard, and no exhaust was visible. It was watched for about 15 minutes.
The object was also seen by the witness's wife and others, who agreed with his account. Both the witness and his wife recalled seeing the same object in about the same place on earlier occasions. The Air Force listed the case as astronomical, identifying the object as the star Arcturus, which was low in the sky in position to set around that time.
