Summary

On August 4, 1956, civilian witnesses near Norfolk, Virginia, reported a single object. The sighting was recorded at 0630Z (night). The object was seen by four airline pilots.

The witnesses described one streak-shaped object with a trail. The color was bright green. The object streaked through the sky and disappeared by exploding in a burst of light. A smoke trail estimated at about 55 feet was visible after the explosion. The total duration was not known.

The controller at the air division thought it was probably a meteor. The Air Force agreed the sighting was probably astronomical, most likely a meteor of the bolide type.
