Summary

On November 3, 1961, civilian witnesses in New York City reported an object at about 5:20 to 5:32 p.m. local time. The report came to a naval air station from city police. A police patrolman on a patrol boat on Jamaica Bay saw a large object that looked like a light. It traveled in a westerly direction across the bay toward the naval air station and the city. Three witnesses were noted. The sighting lasted about two minutes. The witnesses said the object was too big and too fast to be a star. The Air Force listed the case as a probable aircraft, based on the duration and apparent flight.
