Summary

On September 27, 1961, a witness in New York City reported a flying object at about 6:30 p.m. local time. The report was made to a nearby naval air station by phone. The witness saw a long orange cloud trailing an object that had a slight yellow light. It traveled from the southeast to the northeast of the observer, near Columbus Avenue. The object was watched for about 30 seconds before it was hidden by surrounding buildings. The witness gave an estimated altitude of 70 to 82 miles. There was no sound, and only one object was seen. This was a ground visual sighting. The record card lists the conclusion as aircraft.
