Project Blue Book Case File
Midway Island (Pacific), January 1961January 1961
Summary
On January 28, 1961, at night, a pilot and co-pilot flying a landing approach to Midway Island in the Pacific reported a blue-white object with a short, bright tail. It was clearly visible right ahead, bearing about 152 degrees from Midway. The distance was unknown.
The object was about 20 degrees above the horizon, proceeding from left to right. It was estimated to be extremely high and was tracked moving on an estimated course. The crew was unable to identify it further due to high speed and darkness.
The Air Force conclusion was insufficient data. The comment notes that although the description and flight path are characteristic of a meteor, there was not enough data to form a valid conclusion.
