Summary

On October 10, 1961, a civilian in Middle Village, New York, reported an object at about 11:15 p.m. local time. The witness was at Metropolitan Avenue and Elliot Avenue in Queens, facing east. The object looked at first like a star but moved very fast. A few sparks then formed a short, straight tail. It had a light blue or light bulb color. The trajectory was almost flat, moving from north to south at about 30 degrees elevation. The witness said it looked like a shooting star or a rocket burning out. The size and distance were unknown. The Air Force replied on October 23, 1961, and sent a questionnaire for more details. The record card lists the conclusion as a meteor, since the available information pointed to that.
