Summary

On October 26, 1961, a military mission pilot near McAllen, Texas, reported an object at about 7:10 local time. The pilot was rated reliable. The object was brilliant white, with a red glowing color toward the rear and a trail about ten times the length of the object. One object was seen. It moved on a flat, straight path from east-southeast to west-northwest. The tail appeared to be caused by the object breaking apart. The sighting lasted about 20 seconds. The weather was clear above the clouds. The Air Force noted the west-northwest direction ruled out a satellite reentry. It listed the case as a probable fireball of long duration, a meteor or rocket body entering the atmosphere.
