MAUCH CHUNK PA, July 1952July 1952
Summary
On the night of July 14 to 15, 1952, multiple witnesses in Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania observed an unusual object in the sky that changed color, hovered, and moved erratically over several hours. The sightings began around 11:40 p.m. when a man watching a drive-in movie south of nearby Lehighton saw what he first thought was a bright star. The object gave off a yellowish glow and appeared to move in small circles up and down. He reported that it seemed to be surrounded by a red cloud or glow that might have been circling it. The object was roughly three miles southwest of his position, about 20 degrees above the horizon, and remained in a relatively small area during his observation.
Around 12:15 a.m., a second observer from East Mauch Chunk, five miles away from the first sighting, also noticed the object. Using binoculars for a closer look, he confirmed details similar to the first account but noted that the light changed constantly, shifting between bright red and blue-green colors and blinking continuously. He called a family member to witness it as well. Both observers watched for about an hour and thirty-five minutes. The object seemed to move sluggishly southeast and made sudden changes in altitude while staying confined to a local area.
The investigation noted that the initial observers had relevant backgrounds: one was a former B-17 bomber pilot and current Air Force reservist, while another had served as a bombardier and navigator. Weather conditions on the night were ideal for observation, with clear skies and visibility of about twelve miles. Three commercial aircraft and one military aircraft were in the area at the time, but the witnesses stated they could easily distinguish the object from these planes. The Air Force office that conducted the investigation stated it was unable to provide any explanation for the sightings.
