Summary

# Bourbon County, Kentucky, January 1949

In mid-January 1949, people in Bourbon County, Kentucky reported seeing something unusual in the sky. The primary witness was Paul Brannon, a newspaper publisher who was driving with his wife and niece near Paris, Kentucky on January 15, 1949, around 4:30 p.m. Brannon said he saw a dark, walnut-shaped object emerge from behind a cloud, visible for less than a minute. What caught more attention, though, was what came after: a bright "tube of light" that trailed behind the object. Brannon's wife took photographs of this luminous trail. Brannon described the object as moving on a steady, climbing path toward the east, and said the trail was visible for approximately fifteen minutes.

Other witnesses also reported seeing vapor trails in the area that same day. A man identified as the manager of Paris Airport saw a similar formation around 3:30 p.m. at an altitude of about 25,000 to 30,000 feet, moving southeast. Another observer reported watching a smoke trail similar to "sky writing" build up for about three minutes before disappearing into clouds. All three witnesses described the phenomena in terms consistent with high-altitude aircraft vapor trails.

The U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations looked into the case in February 1949. Investigators noted that Brannon was a reliable observer of sound character, though he had grown skeptical of explanations offered to date. Weather data showed strong upper-level winds on January 15, with speeds between 60 and 100 miles per hour at various altitudes. The investigators determined the sightings were consistent with jet aircraft flying at high altitude, which could account for the visible vapor trails and the apparent speed. One observer, a former B-17 pilot familiar with vapor trails from both air and ground, confirmed that the phenomena matched what he had seen from high-flying aircraft during his military service in the European Theater.
