Summary
On July 12, 1962, a civilian housewife in North Hollywood, California, about four miles southwest of the Lockheed Air Terminal, reported two objects. She saw them separately, one at about 9:20 p.m. and one at about 9:45 p.m. Pacific time (13/0420Z and 0445Z).
The objects were shaped like a huge yo-yo, large enough to appear able to carry 40 to 50 passengers. They were seen at night and no color was determined. Each displayed a flashing light, much brighter than a Grimes aircraft light. Flames were discharged opposite to the direction of flight. The sound was like an engine driven propeller aircraft, different from a helicopter. The objects were estimated at about 1,000 feet altitude, headed west, circling, and at one time hovered for about 20 to 30 seconds. They were partly hidden by trees and houses. Her husband and daughter confirmed the observation. The witness was described as rational and reliable.
This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Lockheed Air Terminal reported no unusual sightings at the time, and there were no photographs or physical evidence. Investigators noted the description mostly fit an aircraft, except that the reported propeller sound conflicted with the flame, which would indicate a jet. They were unable to reach the witness again and could not make a firm conclusion as to the cause.
