Project Blue Book Case File
Logan, UtahSeptember 1947
Summary
On the night of September 8, 1947, a man and his wife in Logan, Utah observed five groups of small objects in the sky. Each group contained roughly 35 to 50 yellowish-white objects flying several thousand feet up. The witnesses reported the objects moved at varying speeds. The weather that night was cloudy.
The Air Force investigators found the case difficult to explain with certainty. In their official opinion, they noted that fast motion could be caused by the objects being closer than they appeared, rather than actually moving at extreme speeds. In the darkness, they wrote, any judgment of distance would be unreliable. They suggested that ground lights reflected off low-hanging clouds, which themselves might not be visible, could account for what the witnesses saw. Light-colored birds were also listed as a possible explanation.
Notably, a related incident from the same night in the area (incident #361) was also examined by the Air Force. Officials determined that neither this Logan sighting nor the related incident could be explained as astronomical phenomena such as meteors or planets.
