Summary
On December 11, 1958, at about 9:12 p.m., a military observer in the southeast part of Lincoln, Nebraska, reported a bright object. The witness was a captain and rated Air Force navigator, described as very reliable. The sighting lasted about three seconds.
The object was round and very brilliant white, about the size of a nickel held at arm's length. It had a trail about four times the size of the object. There was no sound. It was first seen at about 35 degrees elevation, slightly below the constellation Orion. It traveled on a track of about 257 degrees and disappeared instantly to the west.
The weather was clear and calm with 15 miles of visibility. The preparing officer believed the object was a meteor. The report notes that meteors were also seen by the Lincoln control tower on the night of December 9. The Air Force concluded the object was astronomical, a meteor.
