Summary

On February 12, 1962, three sources reported an object over Hutchinson, Kansas. The sighting was made at about 1019 GMT and lasted about 5 to 10 seconds. It was seen from the ground by the Hutchinson tower and from the air by two airline flights.

The object was yellowish-white with a yellowish tail and looked like a streak of light. There was one object, with a speed of about 800 to 1000 miles per hour, flying from west to east in a flat trajectory before it faded out. The Central Airlines flight was about 8 miles north of Hutchinson at the time. An American Airlines flight north of Oklahoma City reported the object to its south.

The Air Force record card lists this case as astronomical, a meteor. The card states this appeared to be a multiple sighting of a meteor, and that the duration and flight characteristics supported that conclusion.
