Summary

On September 29, 1962, the Coast Guard received several reports of an object near the Farallon Islands, off California. The time was about 0228Z. Witnesses said an object was fired from the water, leaving a long vapor trail and a red fireball. The vapor trail was still visible at the time of the report.

The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force investigated and a later message evaluated the sighting as unidentified jet aircraft exercises in the area, with the setting sun reflecting on the contrails. The investigating aircraft was recalled.
