Project Blue Book Case File
Fairfield, OhioJuly 1949
Summary
On July 24, 1949, at 2430 hours (12:30 a.m.), a person on the ground in Fairfield, Ohio, watched an object in the sky for about 15 seconds. The object appeared to be about the size of an F-82 fighter plane (a twin-engine aircraft) at traffic altitude, roughly 1,000 feet up. It was white and glowing, and the observer thought it looked like an owl or a stingray fish. The object flew straight from north to south and faded away toward the southwest at a speed the observer estimated at 350 to 400 miles per hour.
The case file is quite brief, and most of the document consists of interview notes and investigation details from a related sighting in Bellingham, Washington, on July 26, 1949, rather than the Fairfield case itself. The main investigation pages contain redacted or illegible sections. The Air Force's evaluation of the Fairfield sighting is listed as "unknown." The complete case file, comprising 8 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
